We are a bakery, cafe, kitchen, and manufacturer-featuring many local favorites, bread, cookies, and specialty bakery items.
Kauai Kookie was founded in 1965 by Mabel Hashisaka. In the beginning, she baked cookies to satisfy a very basic need to provide an island-style dessert to serve at her father’s family business. Nearly 50 years later, Mabel Hashisaka’s simple idea has evolved into one of Hawaii’s most recognizable and trusted brands. Today, we bake more than 50,000 cookies and other specialty bakery items daily as well as produce our highly popular dressings and marinades.
Business History
We trace the first generation of our business to humble beginnings, starting life in Hawaii as immigrant laborers in the sugar plantations. Our business was grown on the foundation laid by our ancestors. Hanapepe was the location of one of two stores initially started by the Kawakami families. In 1965 Kauai Kookie was founded as part of the Big Save Supermarkets and related enterprises. Today we are third-generation proprietors, striking out in a new direction, grateful for those who came before us, and for the vision and values provided to us.
